Penny Angel

Penny L. Angel, 62, of St. George Island, Florida passed away on Monday, September 20, 2010 at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. Born in South Bend, Indiana, she was the daughter of David Flatt and Luella Hall Barber. She earned her BS degree from Ball State University, her Masters from Western Michigan University and her PhD from the University of Georgia. Her honor societies included Phi Kappa Phi and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was passionate about education and it was the focus of her entire career beginning as an English teacher at Mishawaka High School from 1970-1978. She later taught English at Redan High School in DeKalb County. She completed her career as a central office administrator in Marietta City Schools before retiring in 2005. After she retired to St. George Island, Dr. Angel loved being involved in the community and worked with the St. George Lighthouse Association to rebuild the lighthouse. Dr. Angel is survived by her sister, Karen Elliott, her brothers David and Scott Flatt and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Angel meant a lot to many people and will be greatly missed. Her family wishes to offer their sincere appreciation to all those who touched her life. Special thank you to those who offered so much kindness and help to her and to the students who inspired her. A memorial service followed by a celebration will be held at the home of Dr. Angel on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. George Lighthouse Association, 201 Bradford St., St. George Island, FL 32328.
