Richard Porter, 79, of Lilburn, GA, died on February 24, 2024. Richard was proceeded in death by his mother Louise Porter and father Wilford Leon Porter (Pappy). He is survived by his wife Robin Porter, his sister Catherine (Porter) Lewis and brother in-law Scott Lewis of Decatur, Georgia, daughter Marguerite (Porter) Bishop with her husband West Bishop, two grandchildren, Emerson Bishop and Adelynn Bishop of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and son Russell (Porter) Campbell-Porter with husband Ansley Campbell-Porter of Mitchellville, Iowa. Richard spent his entire childhood in Avondale Estates before leaving for Carleton College and then returning to the Atlanta area to complete his Master's degree at Emory University and begin his 30-year teaching career. He was a beloved high school Spanish teacher and swim coach starting at Towers and then Redan High Schools. He was instrumental in helping build the DeKalb County Schools swimming program in the early years. He ended his 30-year teaching career at Norcross High School where he taught Spanish and computer programming. Coach Richard loved to travel with his wife and family seeing numerous places in the world. He loved a good meal and enjoyed exploring the Atlanta food scene with his wife. He will be dearly missed at family gatherings and beach trips where he always brought levity. In lieu of flowers, Richard would love for you to take your family out to dinner at a new restaurant. A celebration of life honoring Richard Porter will be held during the summer and details will be announced at a later time.
